This piece commands your attention with its interpretation of the two types of lava - the products of Hawaii's spectacular erupting volcanoes. The wide, jagged lip depicts the poky roughness of the a'a lava. The bottom of the bowl shows the smooth likeness of pahoehoe lava. Using the age-old technique of the raku process, each handmade piece is heated in a kiln up to the 1400 to 2000 degree mark. The pieces are then taken out and placed into pits full of combustibles and covered where it undergoes a magnificent transformation. The carbon blackens the unglazed clay; and the combination of fire and specific raw elements react to the heat and lack of oxygen to give each piece's unique color pattern. Stands roughly 2-1/2" high with a 5-1/2" diameter and comes with a 1/8" rope base. Decorate your home or office. Some like to float flowers in water for an added flair. The bowls hold water for up to a week, although will absorb some moisture, in which delicate care is necessary around wood surfaces. Use Windex and paper towels for occasional cleaning and dust off lava with compressed air. (#3090) |
