Anthuriums for obvious reasons have been nicknamed the “Heart Flower” of Hawaii. Grown in the very nutrient rich volcanic soil of the Big Island these heart shaped wax like flowers are often mistaken for artificial. The Anthurium was brought to Hawaii in the late1800s, by way of Great Britain, originally from in the rain forests of Columbia. Anthurium meaning “Tail Flower” in Greek is part of the arum family (Araceae) which includes taro, philodendron, monstera, calla lily and the jack-in-the-pulpit. It’s heart shaped petal, which comes in red, pink, white, coral and green, surrounds a knobby tail. These lovely hand made tiles are the sole creations of artists from the Hawaiian Islands. You can hang these on your wall using the convenient keyhole in the masonite backing of your tile or for practical purposes use as a trivet to place hot dishes or pots on. |
