This piece is a tribute to the Honu, or green sea turtle. This ceramic piece is made using the ancient raku technique, creating its signature iridescent colors. The story of the green sea turtle hatchling is a noteworthy adventure in itself. Green sea turtle mothers crawl on shore to lay her eggs, and bury some 100 eggs in her nest - a two feet deep hole. From the moment these two inch, one ounce honu hatchlings crack out of their shell, they must dig themselves out of the sand and run for life across open sandy beaches where prey await them, and still must fight their way through the breaking waves and into the sea. Surviving turtles return to the place of their own birth to mate and make their nests. For several hundred female Hawaiian turtles, this involves a migration to quieter shores of the French Frigate Shaols, some 800 miles northwest of Hawaii, just as their ancestors have done for thousands of years. So it is always a privilege and a spectacular moment to witness one of these Ancients basking on Hawaiian beaches.
