** Large quantity orders available by Special Order only. ** Hawaii’s official state fish is the Humuhumunukunukuapua’a (Hawaiian Triggerfish). Living in the tropical coral reefs of the Pacific Ocean and native to the outer reefs of Hawaii, the Humu feeds on bottom-dwelling invertebrates like mollusks and crabs, and algae. Their name means “fish with a pig’s nose” in Hawaiian, named for their blunt pig-like shaped snout. The humu will sometimes even make grunting noises when fleeing predators. An interesting trivia about our state fish: for 15 years Hawaii did not have an official state fish due to a Hawaiian state law that expired in 1990 and the trigger fish ceased to be the state fish of Hawaii. However, a bill was presented to the Governor of Hawaii in April 2006 which reinstated the humu to be the state fish of Hawaii. Finally, when the bill passed into law May 2, 2006, the humu once again became our official state fish upon the bill’s approval.
