The “Calabash” bowl in old Hawaii was considered precious. Families used this bowl to share food, such as poi. Sometimes it was used to hold important treasures. Since then, the concept of the “calabash” evolved into a ho'okupu, or gift. Today, our local culture recognizes the significance of a “calabash” bowl as an award, trophy, or gift – especially those bowls made of koa wood, in which these are used today in conducting prestigious formal services like ceremonies and blessings.
