The exact origins of hula is unknown, but Hawaiians agree that the first hula was performed by a god or goddess, making the dance a sacred ritual. In the beginning, hula was used in religious ceremonies as a form of worship, but then gradually evolved into forms of entertainment. A dancer’s body movement may represent a certain plant, animal or even war and accompanied by chants to help tell the dancer’s story. The costumes of the ancient dancers consisted of a haku, or lei for the head, a lei around the shoulders, a skirt, or pau, and anklets, or kupea, fashioned out of dog-teeth or whale bone. Our hula attire set comes with: a natural grass hula skirt made of 100% raffia, a bikini top made of 100% cotton, a flower lei, flower for hair, and hula instructions.
