The Hawaiian tree fern (Cibotium glaucum) – called the hapu’u - is found in abundance 500-feet elevation and higher, such as around Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island, which is 4000 feet at Kilauea caldera. The hapu’u tree fern prefers the protected forest setting, especially in and around native ‘ohi’a lehu’a trees. The Hawaiian tree fern does not like the warm beaches and does not do well in very windy areas. Although slow-growing, this native tree fern can grow large in the wild – up to 25 feet tall. From tip to tip, the fronds can spread 10 feet or more.
