This lovely platter is made of ceramic and hand painted with the image of magical Haleakala. The Haleakala summit on Maui in which early Hawaiians dubbed “House of the Sun” was most probably named because the sun can be seen rising up over the eastern side of the mountain from the west side of the island. Hawaiian folklore tells the story of how the demigod Maui, with the help of his grandmother whose home was in the depression at the summit of Haleakala, was able to capture the sun and force it to slow its journey across the sky to lengthen the day. Today, Haleakala is synonymous with the entire East Maui volcano.
